Oppose Trump’s Cruel Budget
Donald Trump has released his proposed budget, and his blueprint for America is shocking. The short version is that this is a budget of cruelty and harm to people and the planet.
The budget contains extreme cuts for programs that benefit the environment, poor people, children, the elderly, people of color, and everyday Americans.
The winners—the rich and the military. The military would receive a $54 billion increase. That huge increase would come at the expense of programs that help keep Americans healthy, housed, and fed.
Just a quick look at a few key cuts gives a sense of the magnitude of the impacts:
- Environment: The Trump Budget calls for a 31% cut to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) budget. The cuts would gut clean air and water programs (at a time when we’re increasingly seeing pollution in drinking water), climate programs, and environmental justice programs that benefit communities of color that are hit the hardest by pollution.
- Climate: The budget would slash funding for clean energy research at the Department of Energy and climate research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and NASA.
- Medical Research: The budget would cut over $5 billion from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), undermining crucial efforts to fight disease and research cures, despite Trump’s promise in his recent address to Congress to find “cures to the illnesses that have always plagued us.”
- Communities in Need: The budget would cut crucial programs that benefit low-income communities nationwide, from low-income housing programs, to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, to Meals on Wheels for seniors and disabled citizens, to school lunch programs, to community development lending, to Legal Services Corporation, which provides free legal services to people in need.
The budget violates many of Trump’s promises to his supporters, including his pledge to increase investment in infrastructure. The only infrastructure spending is budgeted for the Mexican border wall. It also harms people in coal country, as it includes cuts to programs that would help diversify the region’s economy and create new jobs. Finally, it also hurts low-income people and people of color in cities that he pledged to help.
We need to act fast to push for a budget that supports people and planet
Trump’s budget is terrible, but it’s just the beginning of the process. A budget doesn’t take effect until Congress passes it.
That’s why it’s very important to call your senators and representative and tell them that you oppose Trump’s draconian budget cuts.
Instead, you want Congress to pass a budget that fully funds clean water and air programs, and climate change and clean energy research— including fully funding the EPA, the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); preserving funding vital programs that benefit low income communities; and protecting the budgets of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services that aid people in need.
Call the Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 today to be connected to your two senators and representative to let them know you oppose the Trump budget and expect them to pass a budget that supports people and the planet.
