More Proof of Child Labor in Apple’s Supply Chain

The UK Guardian newspaper published last week that Apple’s own internal audits have now turned up multiple child-labor violations in its Chinese factories.  The audit found more than 100 children under the age of 16 at 11 factories.  The same report found incidences of other violations, including mandatory pregnancy tests, confiscation of workers’ wages to pay off recruitment agencies, and workers’ wages docked as punishment.

From the Guardian:

[Apple’s] audit found a flipside to the western consumer’s insatiable thirst for innovative and competitively priced gadgets. It uncovered 106 cases of underage labour being used at Apple suppliers last year and 70 cases historically. The report follows a series of worker suicides over working conditions at Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that assembles must-have products such as the iPad and iPhone, and lethal explosions at other plants.
