Don’t Pay for Next Generation Nukes
Did our government learn nothing from the terrible nuclear disaster at Fukushima?
Little more than one year later, the federal government has opened negotiations with Southern Company – one of the worst-polluting electric utilities in the country – to provide $8.3 billion in loan guarantees for two new nuclear power plants.
Tell Congress: No nuclear loan guarantees »
As we note in our 10 Strikes Against Nuclear Power article, the private sector is largely unwilling to finance nuclear power because of all the risks involved – national security risks, human-health risks, the risk of accidents at nuclear plants, and more.
As the Nuclear Energy Institute reported to the US Department of Energy, “100 percent loan coverage [by taxpayers] is essential … because the capital markets are unwilling, now and for the foreseeable future, to provide the financing necessary” for new nuclear power plants.
We DO have other options that don’t include nukes. We at Green America want the federal goverment supporting truly green solutions like energy efficiency, solar power, wind power – even tidal power. At a time when other nations like Japan and Germany are scaling back or eliminating their nuclear programs, let’s tell Congress loud and clear that we don’t need taxpayer money helping to finance the first US nuclear plants in a generation.
